Summertime Beauty Routines Require Updates ~ by Cher

We’re looking forward to warmer weather and fun in the sun and hope you are too. But in the excitement of planning to get away post-lockdown, don’t forget to step up your summer haircare routine. We love the sun but our hair really doesn’t react the same way!

Why those rays will wreck your hair…

The sun will very quickly alter the structure of your hair, making it weaker, much drier and far more prone to breakage and split ends as it becomes less elastic. And just as the sun can burn our skin, it can also burn our hair – but we don’t think about it because we can’t feel it in the same way.

Not that sun is not all bad…

More sun means more vitamin D is absorbed by the skin which is good for us and can give our hair cells a healthy boost. Plus, sunny weather and a relaxing break is good for de-stressing – which will also contributes to healthier hair.

Here’s how to care for your sun-sational summer hair…

  • Let’s look at altering your shampoo and conditioner for summer. Hair gets used to the same products and sometimes changing it up gives you a lift. Summer shampoo should have lower or no sulfates and conditioners should have more moisture in them. Switching to a hydrating shampoo and conditioner for the summer months helps protect your hair and keep it looking its absolute best. We have several moisture-rich shampoos and conditioners to keep your hair hydrated in the summer including...

Moroccan Oil Hydrating and Moisture Repair Shampoos & Conditioners

Pureology Hydrate, Hydrate Sheer and NanoWorks Gold Shampoos & Conditioners

Redken Color Extend Magnetics and All Soft Shampoos & Conditioners

  • If you have any type of color or highlights, you may want to add a custom color shampoo to your regular weekly regimen. Public water supplies will often double or triple the amount of chlorine added to kill bacteria in warm weather. Not to mention the added effect of chlorine in pool water! Chlorine will pull out glazes and shine from your hair, whether you have color or not, often making your hair look dull and lifeless. Custom color shampoo adds both pigment and tone to enhance your color and shine.

Color shampoo should be used once to twice weekly depending on how often you shampoo your hair. And they should not be used until two weeks after your fresh color service. Ask your stylist for their advice – we love to help and will custom blend a product specific to you!

As for treating damage caused by bromine, chlorine and salt water, try Swimmers Wellness by Malibu or schedule a removal treatment at the salon.

  • Deep conditioning treatments are king when it comes to summer hair. Treat yourself to an in-salon professional hydrating and repairing treatment – your stylist will recommend the right one for your hair. They will also advise you on which home-use self-care treatments will be best for you.

  • In the same way as you apply sunscreen to protect your skin from damaging UV rays, use a sun protector for your hair. We like Pureology’s Color Fanatic Multi-Task Leave-In Spray because it protects hair with a natural UV filter and helps keep haircolor from fading or becoming brassy by protecting it from exposure to environmental factors that weaken the hair.

  • Finally, it’s especially important in the summer to go easy on heated styling tools. Try turning the temperature down a notch or two and always use a thermal protectant. And, when you can, air dry your hair naturally after washing.
